A school has specific and diverse requirements for IT. Much of the curriculum now relies on IT related technology, as does school administration. This places particular demands on both the hardware and the support needed by a school.

Hardware
A school's network generally encompasses multiple buildings, sometimes quite removed from each other. Add a wireless network or two, and the result is quite a complex setup. We can offer the detailed attention and experience needed to design, install and maintain such a network. Furthermore, whilst a single platform can, on paper, be desirable, mixed platforms (eg Mac, Windows or Linux) are no issue for us. In practice it is hard to achieve a single platform (science wants a Windows based lab, whilst art wants a Mac lab), and in reality is not desirable.

Support
In our experience, remote support, whilst having its place, has limited application in a school. Staff have little to no time to deal with IT issues or problems (nor a desire sometimes). If an issue is raised by a staff member, they are likely busy when the IT technician logs on remotely to deal with the problem (they are, after all, paid to teach), so the issue is put off till they are available, at which point the technician is busy elsewhere, and so it goes on.

This is why we feel strongly that onsite support is a must for an educational institution. A quick 20 second interruption to a class is acceptable, and usually all that is needed to clarify the problem at hand. The technician can then set about fixing the problem and reporting to the staff member at a later time when convenient. Staff remain happy, issues are solved within reasonable time frames, and a relationship develops between the staff and the IT team.
